Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee will work on six of the 200 limited edition homes Samira Habitats is developing at Alibag near Mumbai. The designer will work closely with the project architect to ensure structural compliance of the masonry, while filling in with his craft and elements. These would cost upwards of Rs 1 crore each, reports Business Line.
The purpose: To lend individuality and embed creativity that the designer exhibits in his apparel on the ground. “When I decided to extend my love for visual aesthetics, form and colour to interiors, I chose Samira Habitats because of their offerings of finely crafted homes close to nature. Their eye for opulence and detail is a vision I passionately share,” Mukherjee was quoted as saying.
“I am here extending myself in terms of interiors, fashion and jewellery,” the designer added.
The biggest common denominator aesthetically is colour. “I have done homes for friends for a long time. I do get requests to do restaurants and hotels. Luxury homes across the world seem to follow the generic pattern of wellness. My prerogative is to give it a little touch of cultural ethnicity by doing firsthand furniture with second-hand antiques and taking cross-country influences from across the world so it looks like a person who has widely travelled,” said Mukherjee.
Mukherjee has still not decided on his retainer or billing details but says both Samira and he had common clients — for apparel and property — and many had evinced interest in taking up his creative trophy. It would be too premature to fix a price tag, Mukherjee said, adding that a home could come with a Rs 30-lakh chandelier.
Samira Habitats has already sold about 22 units of its 2 BHK and 3 BKH formats at an average price of Rs 1 crore. As for the signature villas, Mihir Nerurkar, executive director, said the sale would be by invitation and most clients he planned to invite were Mukherjee fans because it was the same element of his that Samira wanted to transfer into the residential project. The company plans to release two Sabyasachi-designed homes each year.
